‘Everything around him is different’ – Baffoe explains Semenyo’s Ghana struggles

Former Ghana defender Anthony Baffoe has attributed Antoine Semenyo’s underwhelming record with the Black Stars to a lack of cohesion and consistency within the national team setup.

Semenyo has been in electric form for Manchester City, scoring 15 goals and emerging as one of the leading marksmen in the Premier League.

However, that sharpness has not translated to the international stage, where he has managed only three goals in nearly five years.

Baffoe, speaking in Accra during Ghana’s friendly against Germany national football team, pointed to structural and personnel challenges as key factors behind the disparity.

“Semenyo is a top class player, but at the moment Black Stars are not Man City.

“So everything around him is totally different and don’t forget, we are playing without the likes of Kudus, Kamaldeen just came back from injury.

“Thomas Partey is not 100% in shape, which is also fully understandable. They need to be in top form.

“I think Jordan had a very good match. He was very, very active on the pitch. So if those guys are really also in shape, I think Semenyo also will be good. They’ll provide better balls for him.”

Ghana’s defeat to Germany marked a fourth straight loss, but signs of organisation offered cautious optimism ahead of upcoming friendlies and the 2026 World Cup.
