Everton left reeling as Folarin Balogun deal collapses after Iliman Ndiaye exit

Everton have been left “shocked” and “disappointed” after their move for Folarin Balogun dramatically collapsed in the final moments of transfer deadline day, leaving manager David Moyes with a major problem in attack.

The Toffees had been working on a deal worth around £40 million for the 25-year-old striker and appeared to be closing in on an agreement with AS Monaco. Everton even submitted the necessary paperwork to secure additional time to complete the transfer after the deadline had passed.

However, despite their efforts, the deal ultimately fell through, with Balogun remaining at Monaco and Everton unable to secure the attacking reinforcement they had identified as a priority.

Teamtalk reports that Everton were left “shocked” and “disappointed” by the breakdown and that there was genuine disbelief within the club over the situation, with Balogun reportedly rejecting the move at the final stage.

The collapse represents a significant setback for Moyes, particularly given the events that preceded it on deadline day.

Ndiaye and Beto departures leave Moyes exposed

Everton had already sanctioned the departure of Beto to Fiorentina for around £15 million, while Iliman Ndiaye completed a move to Manchester City.

Those exits have left Thierno Barry as Everton’s only senior striker, creating an immediate concern for Moyes as the club prepares to navigate the remainder of the campaign.

The failure to land Balogun therefore carries greater weight than a single missed transfer. Everton had been attempting to reshape their attacking options, but the late collapse means they have lost two established forwards without securing the replacement they wanted.

Balogun’s availability had made him an attractive target. The United States international has scored 31 goals in 91 appearances across all competitions for Monaco and established himself as one of the Ligue 1 club’s leading attacking threats.

His performances for the USA at the World Cup over the summer also enhanced his reputation and attracted interest from a number of high-profile clubs, including Aston Villa and Barcelona.

Everton’s pursuit appeared to offer Balogun an opportunity to become a central figure in Moyes’ attack, but the proposed switch ultimately failed to materialise.

Grealish offers Everton a much-needed attacking boost

There is, however, some consolation for Everton following the collapse of the Balogun deal.

Jack Grealish will remain at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for another season on loan from Manchester City, providing Moyes with an established creative presence despite the shortage of senior strikers.

Grealish made a strong impression during his initial spell at Everton and believes he is returning in the right frame of mind after recovering from injury.

The England international said his connection with the club’s supporters was a major factor in his desire to continue on Merseyside.

“I’m so happy. I think I’m at my best at everything in life, not just football, when I feel loved. That’s what the manager has given me, what my teammates have given me and especially what the fans have given me. Every time I see an Everton fan, it’s just pure love.

“It means a lot to me and hopefully I’ve made a few Everton fans happy. I had a perfect time here for the first six months, then I stayed around after I got injured. I’ve been watching all the Everton games in pre-season and since the season started. Now I feel ready to go.”

Grealish’s return gives Moyes another attacking dimension, but his presence does not completely solve the problem created by Balogun’s failed transfer.
