Europa League: Nigerian forward Philip Otele nets consolation goal for Basel in defeat at Genk
Nigerian international Philip Otele was on target for FC Basel on Thursday night when the team suffered a 2-1 defeat to KRC Genk in the Europa League.
Genk opened the scoring in the 14th minute through Hyeon-Gyu Oh, who showed impressive composure after receiving a clever pass from Zakaria El Ouahdi. His finish into the top of the net left Basel goalkeeper Marwin Hitz with little chance.
Deep into first-half stoppage time, the hosts doubled their lead. Konstantinos Karetsas glided past defenders before unleashing a superb shot from the edge of the box that rocketed into the top left corner, giving Genk a strong 2-0 advantage at the break.
Basel responded in the 57th minute when Benie Traoré delivered a precise cross into the box. Otele reacted sharply, guiding the ball into the bottom right corner to pull one back for the visitors.
Despite Basel’s improved second-half display, Genk held firm to secure all three points.
Otele’s effort, while well taken, ultimately wasn’t enough to alter the outcome.
