Europa League: Nigerian forward Philip Otele nets consolation goal for Basel in 2-1 defeat to SC Freiburg
Nigerian attacker Philip Otele was on the scoresheet for FC Basel on Wednesday night when the team suffered a 2-1 defeat to SC Freiburg in the Europa League.
In the game played at Europa-Park Stadion, the hosts took the lead in the 31st minute when Patrick Osterhage pounced on a loose ball outside the box and unleashed a superb strike into the bottom left corner, leaving Mirko Salvi helpless.
Freiburg doubled their advantage in the 57th minute through Maximilian Eggestein, who connected with a pinpoint cross from Vincenzo Grifo to head home from close range.
Basel kept pushing and were rewarded in the 84th minute. A slick exchange between Otele and Leo Leroy opened up space for the Nigerian, who rifled a fine effort into the top right corner to pull one back.
