France’s U21 team secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Georgia in their Euro 2021 qualifying match at the Stade Marcel Picot in Nancy, in front of over 11,000 spectators. The French side, coached by Sylvain Ripoll, set up in a 4-3-3 formation to exploit the flanks, while Georgia countered with a 4-4-2, aiming to pressure the midfield. From the first whistle, both teams played with intensity, creating early opportunities on either end.

France started brightly, with Jonathan Ikoné making a dangerous run down the left in the opening minute, though his effort was cleared for a corner. Georgia immediately responded through Giorgi Kokhreidze, whose shot grazed the post, signaling an evenly contested start. France gradually took control, highlighted by Moussa Diaby’s dribbling and combinations with Eduardo Camavinga, but the Georgian defense held firm.

The deadlock was broken in the 14th minute when a scramble inside the Georgian box, following a corner and a shot hitting the post, allowed French captain Jeff Reine-Adélaïde to slot home at the far post, giving France a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Diaby nearly doubled the advantage, only for his shot to strike the post, while further attempts by Camavinga and Ikoné were blocked. Georgia threatened late in the first half, but goalkeeper Alban Lafont remained alert, keeping the lead intact at halftime.

The second half saw Georgia return with increased intensity, forcing France back. Moussa Diaby had another chance in the 51st minute, saved by goalkeeper Luka Gugeshashvili, before Reine-Adélaïde scored a stunning free kick, extending France’s lead to 2-0. The captain’s performance remained influential as he orchestrated attacks and linked play with Ikoné and Edouard.

However, defensive lapses allowed Georgia back into the match. A misjudged back pass by Kamara left Lafont out of position, enabling Georgia’s number 10 to tap in and make it 2-1. Shortly after, a well-executed move from Beka Kavtaradze to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia resulted in an equalizer at 2-2 in the 62nd minute. Ripoll responded with substitutions, introducing Zaydou Youssouf and Arnaud Nordin to boost France’s attacking threat.

The match remained tense as both sides sought the winner. Georgia created dangerous chances, particularly through Kvaratskhelia, but France held firm defensively. In stoppage time, France earned a penalty when Kochorashvili fouled a French attacker, and Odsonne Edouard calmly converted to secure a 3-2 victory in the dying moments of the game.

The comeback win was a testament to France’s resilience and determination, providing a significant morale boost for the U21 squad in their Euro 2021 qualifying campaign. Despite the defensive lapses, key contributions from Reine-Adélaïde, Diaby, and Edouard highlighted the team’s attacking quality, while Ripoll’s tactical adjustments and timely substitutions proved decisive in snatching the victory.

This late triumph ensures that France starts their qualifying campaign on a positive note, showcasing their fighting spirit and potential to compete strongly in the tournament ahead. The Espoirs will take confidence from overcoming a persistent Georgian side and will look to build on this performance in their upcoming fixtures.
