Claude Makelele has officially ended his tenure as head coach of KAS Eupen, the Jupiler Pro League club announced on Friday. The Frenchman of Congolese descent, who joined Eupen in 2017, steps down from his role with the first team but will remain with the club as an ambassador for social projects, a position he will hold until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The club cited a desire for a “new approach with a new head coach” for the upcoming season while emphasizing that Makelele’s contributions remain valued.

Makelele, a former French international midfielder renowned for his defensive prowess during his playing career, had joined Eupen midway through the 2017-18 season. In his two-year stint as head coach, he successfully achieved the club’s primary objectives, notably securing KAS Eupen’s place in Belgium’s top division for two consecutive seasons. His leadership stabilized the team and allowed the club to maintain its status in the competitive Jupiler Pro League, meeting the expectations set when he took over.

Before Eupen, Makelele’s first experience as a head coach came at Bastia in 2014, a tenure that was considered unsuccessful. However, his work at Eupen marked a significant turnaround in his managerial career. By combining his tactical understanding with motivational leadership, Makelele helped a relatively modest Belgian side remain competitive in the top tier. His ability to navigate challenges, adapt strategies, and maintain team morale earned him respect within the club and among fans.

Eupen’s official statement highlighted Makelele’s new responsibilities, noting that while a fresh approach is being adopted for the first team, the Frenchman’s ongoing role as an ambassador will focus on social initiatives. This transition underscores the club’s recognition of Makelele’s influence beyond the pitch, valuing his experience, leadership, and public profile to support broader community projects.

The decision to shift Makelele to an ambassadorial role also reflects the club’s long-term strategy. While the search for a new head coach aims to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the team, maintaining Makelele’s involvement ensures continuity and preserves a connection between the club’s history and its future ambitions. His presence off the field is expected to enhance Eupen’s social and community outreach programs, further strengthening the club’s reputation and engagement with supporters.

Claude Makelele leaves Eupen having achieved his main professional objectives, demonstrating his growth as a coach while also paving the way for the next chapter in his career. His transition to an ambassadorial position allows him to remain closely tied to the club, contributing to its development in a new capacity and leveraging his profile to benefit social projects while the team looks forward to a new season under fresh leadership.
