Samuel Eto’o Weighs Options Amid Premier League and Qatari Interest
Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o remains without a club following his departure from Chelsea in June, but his next move could soon be decided as several teams express serious interest in the veteran striker.
The 33-year-old, whose illustrious career has included spells at Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, is currently considering a range of offers. Clubs such as AS Roma, Juventus, Fiorentina, Queens Park Rangers, and Ajax have all reportedly opened discussions, but negotiations have stalled—largely due to Eto’o’s high wage demands.
Despite those hurdles, Eto’o could yet remain in the Premier League. According to The Daily Mirror, Everton have emerged as frontrunners in the race for his signature. Manager Roberto Martínez is believed to be an admirer of the striker and is keen to add him to the Toffees’ attacking options ahead of the closing days of the transfer window.
Eto’o scored nine goals in 21 league appearances during his single season with Chelsea and showed flashes of the clinical finishing that defined his earlier years. However, some clubs have been reluctant to meet his salary expectations, given his age and fitness concerns.
Beyond Europe, Eto’o is also reportedly being courted by a club in Qatar, who are willing to offer a lucrative deal to tempt the four-time African Footballer of the Year to the Middle East.
Eto’o has not publicly indicated his preference, but sources close to the player suggest he is still keen to compete at a high level in Europe. A move to Everton would see him remain in one of the world’s most competitive leagues, while also providing added depth to a squad looking to build on a strong 2013–14 campaign under Martínez.
With the transfer window closing soon, a decision is expected in the coming days as the football world waits to see where one of Africa’s greatest players will continue his career.
