Mariano Barreto Appointed as New Coach of Ethiopian National Football Team
After weeks of speculation, it has been officially confirmed that Mariano Barreto is the new head coach of the Ethiopian national football team. The Portuguese coach, whose name had been frequently linked to the role, reached an agreement with the Ethiopian Football Federation and signed a two-year contract.
The announcement, made on Tuesday, comes after a period of uncertainty following the dismissal of former coach Sewnet Bishaw in February, following Ethiopia’s disappointing performance in the 2014 CHAN (African Nations Championship).
According to Afrik-foot, Barreto will receive a monthly salary of $18,000 for his services. The 57-year-old, who has a wealth of experience in African football, takes over a team that has faced challenges in recent years but is hopeful for a fresh start under the new management.
Barreto’s appointment is seen as a significant step for Ethiopian football as the national team aims to regain its competitiveness on the continental stage. The Portuguese coach has previously managed clubs in various African countries, and his experience will be vital in helping the team progress.
Ethiopia’s football fans will be hoping that under Barreto’s leadership, the national team can rebuild and improve its standing in African football competitions.
