Essam El-Hadary, the legendary former goalkeeper of the Egyptian national team, continues to etch his name in the annals of African football, holding a record that remains unmatched to this day. His enduring legacy stems from a remarkable career that saw him grace the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) stage like no other player.

El-Hadary made his debut for the Pharaohs in 1998, but it wasn’t until the 2006 edition that he captivated the world. Emerging victorious in 2006, he replicated the triumph in 2008 and 2010, securing his status as a football luminary.

The former Zamalek SC custodian’s unparalleled achievement lies in his participation in the most AFCON finals, a record that stands unchallenged.

Even in 2017, at the age of 44, El-Hadary showcased his unwavering commitment by steering Egypt to yet another final. Unfortunately, a penalty shootout loss to Cameroon denied him a fourth title.

Nevertheless, his tally of contested AFCON finals stands at an unmatched four, with three victories. No player in the rich history of African football has achieved this feat.

As the curtains rise on the 2023 African Cup of Nations, culminating in the final clash between Nigeria and Ivory Coast on February 11, 2024, the spotlight once again turns to El-Hadary’s enduring legacy.

The new generation of African footballers, brimming with ambition, may eventually set new records, but for now, Essam El-Hadary remains the unassailable maestro of AFCON finals.

The question lingers: Will El-Hadary be dethroned in the years to come? With emerging talents and the unpredictability of football, the landscape may change.

The 51-year-old goalkeeping icon’s reign, however, endures, symbolizing an era where his indomitable spirit and skill have left an indelible mark on the beautiful game.
