Esperance hit back at refereeing row after narrow win over Stade Tunisien
Tunisian heavyweights Espérance Sportive de Tunis have taken a swipe at Stade Tunisien for criticizing refereeing decisions in their league clash on Saturday.
Esperance secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory in the postponed fixture from the 20th round of the Tunisian Ligue 1, a result that reignited debate surrounding the referee’s performance and the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Shortly after the defeat, Stade Tunisien released a fiery statement condemning the officiating, going as far as describing VAR as a “poorly staged farce” and questioning several key decisions made during the encounter.
However, Esperance have swiftly hit back at Stade Tunisien, stressing the side will not allow any party to systematically distort our victories.
Esperance Statement:
One match was scheduled for Saturday as part of the Tunisian league, and it was supposed to give refereeing experts and analysts on various television and radio channels the opportunity to monitor and analyze all the questionable refereeing cases objectively and clearly for the public.
However, we were surprised that only the incident in which the Tunisian Stadium team demanded a penalty kick was addressed, while ignoring the most prominent and clearest incident in the match, which was the foul committed against our striker Danho inside the penalty area, which without hesitation warranted the announcement of a penalty kick in our favor.
The analysis of the Jan Sass incident and the handball by one of the Tunisian Stadium defenders was also ignored, which is a refereeing situation that opens the door to more than one interpretation, including the possibility of awarding a penalty kick.
Despite our understanding of the good faith shown in dealing with such cases, we have the right to question why the clearest incident in the match was not reviewed and analyzed, especially since it warranted the announcement of a clear penalty kick.
The same question arises regarding the Video Assistant Referee’s (VAR) handling of this situation, and his failure to intervene and call the on-field referee to review the footage, despite its clarity. This was – and we reiterate – the most prominent incident in the match.
We hope that this selective approach to analyzing arbitration cases is merely an unintentional oversight, because anything else raises more than one question mark and causes concern.
On the other hand, Esperance of Tunisia is well aware that some parties may exploit such events to launch systematic campaigns targeting the team, by stirring up public sports opinion or trying to influence referees in upcoming matches.
In this context, Esperance of Tunisia affirms that it will continue to defend its legitimate rights by all legal and regulatory means, and will not allow any party to systematically distort its victories.
Title Race Intensifies
The win proved crucial in the title race, lifting Esperance to 46 points and returning them to the summit of the league table, one point clear of rivals Club Africain in second place.
Focus Shifts to African Showdown
Attention now turns to continental action, as Esperance prepare to face Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.
The first leg is scheduled to take place at the iconic Stade Olympique de Radès on Friday, March 13, with the return leg set for March 20.
In further developments, Esperance recently confirmed the appointment of French tactician Patrice Beaumelle as head coach on an 18-month contract. The former Angola national team boss will be tasked with maintaining the club’s domestic momentum while guiding them deep into continental competition.
With tensions rising both on and off the pitch, Esperance’s focus remains firmly on sustaining their push for silverware on multiple fronts.
