José Anigo to Depart Espérance de Tunis After Al Ahly Clash
By BBC Sport – African Football
José Anigo has confirmed that he will step down as head coach of Espérance de Tunis following Saturday’s CAF Confederation Cup clash against Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
The former Olympique de Marseille manager made the announcement during a press conference ahead of the Group A encounter, marking an end to his brief and turbulent tenure at the Tunisian club.
“The match against Al Ahly will be my last,” Anigo stated. “I am leaving the club regardless of Saturday’s result.”
Anigo’s spell in charge lasted just two months, during which he oversaw six matches and managed only two victories. His time at Espérance has been marred by underwhelming performances, including an early exit from the Tunisian Cup at the hands of modest side Hammam-Lif. In continental competition, the club has struggled to assert itself, with results falling well below expectations.
The announcement adds further pressure to what is already a decisive fixture for Espérance in the CAF Cup. With the team languishing at the bottom of Group A and needing a win to keep their slim qualification hopes alive, the match will be both a farewell for Anigo and a test of the squad’s resilience.
Anigo, who rose to prominence with Marseille — guiding them to a UEFA Cup final in 2004 — took the reins at Espérance with hopes of revitalising the team’s continental ambitions. However, his tenure failed to deliver the turnaround both he and the club had envisioned.
Espérance de Tunis, one of Africa’s most successful and storied clubs, now faces yet another transition. As the search for a new head coach begins, supporters will be hoping for a swift rebound and renewed focus ahead of the coming domestic and continental campaigns.
