Eric Tinkler set for Durban City return after Asante Kotoko exit

South African coach Eric Tinkler is expected to return home and take charge of Durban City following his departure from Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko.

Kotoko confirmed on Monday, 28 September 2026, that they had agreed to release Tinkler from his contract with immediate effect.

The decision came less than 24 hours after the Porcupine Warriors suffered a 2-0 home defeat by Aduana FC in the Ghana Premier League.

The club said Tinkler had requested to leave for personal reasons after discussions between the two parties aimed at keeping him in the role.

Tinkler’s next destination is expected to be Durban City, who are also looking for a new manager following the departure of Tunisian coach Khalil Ben Youssef.

Ben Youssef left the club on Saturday after three months in charge.

He oversaw seven Betway Premiership matches, recording one win, four draws and two defeats. He also guided City through their successful CAF Confederation Cup preliminary-round tie against Rukinzo FC.

Tinkler is already familiar with Durban City, having previously been linked with the club before they appointed Ben Youssef in June.

The former Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United coach was reported to have been among the leading candidates for the position at the time.

A move to Durban City would bring Tinkler’s short spell in Ghana to an end after he was appointed by Kotoko ahead of the 2026-27 Ghana Premier League season.

He arrived with expectations of helping the Porcupine Warriors challenge for domestic honours, but his tenure has lasted only a few months.

Kotoko must now begin the search for a replacement as they prepare for their next league fixture.

Durban City, meanwhile, are preparing for the continuation of their domestic campaign and their CAF Confederation Cup involvement.

If completed, Tinkler’s appointment would see him return to South African football just days after leaving Kotoko.
