Eric Chelle dismisses claims of nepotism in Super Eagles appointment

Niger Refutation De Rumeurs Par Eric Chelle Sur Sa Nomination Thumbnail

Eric Chelle has firmly rejected speculation that his appointment as head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles was the result of personal connections rather than merit.

The former Mali national team boss, who succeeded Augustine Eguavoen at the helm of the Nigerian side, clarified that his recruitment followed a formal and transparent process initiated by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Speaking to the media, Chelle detailed the rigorous steps he undertook to secure the role, insisting that his selection was based entirely on professional competence and vision.

Chelle revealed that following his departure from the Malian national team, he submitted an application in response to an official call for candidates issued by the NFF.

As part of the selection procedure, he was invited to present a comprehensive technical project and deliver a conference outlining his strategic plan for the Super Eagles.

“There was no backdoor or preferential route,” Chelle said, addressing rumours that he had bypassed standard procedures. “I applied like any other candidate, submitted my vision for the team, and was evaluated on that basis.”

His appointment, though delayed, was eventually confirmed after what he described as “decisive and constructive” negotiations with Nigerian officials.

Chelle praised the professionalism of the process and expressed his appreciation for the faith shown in him by the federation.

Despite the speculation surrounding his selection, the 46-year-old remains focused on his new responsibilities. Known for his tactical discipline and strong leadership during his time with Mali, Chelle now takes on the challenge of guiding one of Africa’s most high-profile national teams through a critical period of rebuilding and qualification campaigns.

His tenure begins with high expectations, not only due to Nigeria’s rich footballing heritage but also because of the recent inconsistencies in performances and results that prompted the change in leadership.

Supporters and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Chelle implements his vision on the pitch and manages the wealth of talent available to the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian football community remains divided on the coaching appointment, with some voices continuing to question the transparency of the process.

However, Chelle’s straightforward rebuttal and emphasis on merit-based selection are likely to reassure many within the game.

Moving forward, Chelle has expressed his commitment to developing a cohesive squad capable of delivering results on the continental and global stage.

“I believe in this project, and I believe in the players,” he stated. “It’s an honour to be trusted with this responsibility, and I will give everything to make the nation proud.”

With Chelle at the helm, the Super Eagles are expected to enter a new phase defined by tactical discipline, youth development, and a renewed ambition to reclaim their place among Africa’s football elite.
