Eric Chelle apologizes after Nigeria suffer heavy defeat in Guinea Bissau

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has apologized to the Super Eagles supporters after his side suffered a heavy 3 0 defeat by Guinea Bissau in their second 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The result was a major setback for Nigeria, who had started their qualifying campaign with a 2 1 victory over Madagascar. Chelle accepted responsibility for the defeat and admitted that Guinea Bissau were the better side on the night.

The Franco Malian coach said his players were unable to match the intensity of their opponents, who took control of the contest through greater commitment and aggression.

“They were more aggressive than us,” he added.

Chelle also discussed the condition of the pitch at the September 24 Stadium, where Nigeria played for the first time. However, he was clear that the surface could not be used to explain away the result.

“It’s not an excuse, but they know their pitch. They usually play on this pitch, but for us it was the first time and the pitch was very bad,” explained Chelle.

Nigeria struggled to impose themselves during the match as Guinea Bissau took advantage of their opportunities. The Super Eagles were unable to find a response after falling behind, while their hosts continued to cause problems.

Chelle attempted to change the direction of the game after the interval by introducing more pace and attacking options on the wings. The changes were intended to give Nigeria greater threat in the final third and provide a way back into the contest.

They ultimately failed to produce the desired response, with Nigeria unable to reduce the deficit before Guinea Bissau completed a convincing victory.

The defeat leaves Nigeria with three points from their opening two matches. Guinea Bissau, meanwhile, have taken maximum points from their first two games and sit three points ahead of the Super Eagles on six points.

Nigeria had entered the qualifiers with expectations raised by their opening win against Madagascar, but the loss in Guinea Bissau means Chelle’s side must now respond in their next match.

The Super Eagles will face Tanzania in their next qualifying fixture, with the team looking to recover from Tuesday’s disappointing performance and strengthen their position in the group.
