Kermit Erasmus has revealed the conversation that helped Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams save Ghampani Lungu’s penalty against Orlando Pirates.
Williams once again produced a decisive intervention when Sundowns needed him, repeating the kind of influence he showed during the CAF Champions League final.
After the match, Williams explained that Ricardo Goss had provided information which helped him anticipate where Lungu might place his penalty. Goss had played alongside Lungu at Siwelele last season and shared his insight with the Bafana Bafana captain.
Goss and Williams had also been team-mates at SuperSport United, meaning Goss may have been familiar with Lungu’s approach from their time together.
“He and Ronwen played together at SuperSport United; he probably knew him as well,” Erasmus said in an interview with SuperSport TV.
“Just before doing this interview, I was speaking with Ronwen. Goss told him that when he went to his left, he kicked over the goals, and he said to Goss when they were together at Siwelele that Ronwen likes to first faint before he dives; he faints one side and he dives the opposite side.
“Ronwen told me he never fainted at all before he went, and that’s what put Lungu off.”
Williams ultimately chose his direction and kept out Lungu’s effort, with the preparation from Goss helping to shape his decision before the kick was taken.
