Tensions have emerged in Equatorial Guinea following the appointment of Sebastien Migné as head coach of the national team. The Feguifut (Equatorial Guinean Football Federation) officially confirmed Migné’s hiring, but the decision has sparked discontent from the outgoing coach, Dani Guindos Lopez.
The Spanish manager feels blindsided by the federation’s move. Appointed in September, Guindos had already overseen Nzalang in a friendly against Togo last month, which ended 1-1 in Marseille. Having invested weeks of preparation for the upcoming 2021 AFCON qualifiers, he expected clarity regarding his position but was taken aback by Migné’s sudden arrival.
“My team and I have been working for several weeks on the start of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers,” Guindos lamented, expressing frustration at what he perceives as a lack of transparency from Feguifut. The Spanish coach criticized the federation’s handling of the situation, implying that proper communication and planning were absent.
Sebastien Migné, a French coach with prior experience managing Congo and Kenya, officially takes over from Guindos. While Migné’s appointment brings experience and continuity in preparation for the crucial AFCON qualifiers, the abrupt transition highlights internal tensions within Feguifut.
The federation’s decision underscores the sometimes turbulent nature of football management in national teams, where changes in leadership can occur suddenly, even amidst ongoing preparations. For Equatorial Guinea, the focus now shifts to ensuring that the coaching change does not disrupt the team’s readiness for the upcoming qualifiers against Tanzania and Tunisia.
Guindos’ disappointment also raises questions about communication and planning within the federation, as well as the challenges faced by national teams in balancing managerial stability with performance expectations. For Nzalang, the immediate priority will be to adapt to Migné’s methods and maintain the momentum built under Guindos, despite the controversy surrounding the coaching transition.
