Cameroon defender Enzo Tchato leaves Montpellier for Serie A challenge

Cameroon defender Enzo Tchato has left Montpellier to join newly promoted Frosinone on a four-year contract, beginning his first spell outside France with a move to Serie A.

The 23-year-old has signed an agreement that will keep him at Frosinone until 30 June 2030, bringing his long association with Montpellier to an end.

Tchato had one year remaining on his contract with the French club, but has now completed a permanent move to Italy. According to Ici Hérault, Frosinone will pay about €800,000 for the defender.

The fee brings an end to a 17-year association between Tchato and Montpellier, having joined the club in 2008 as a young player.

He progressed through the club’s system before signing his first professional contract in 2022. Tchato then established himself in Montpellier’s first team, spending three seasons playing in Ligue 1.

During that period, the defender made 66 appearances and became a regular option for the club before Montpellier’s relegation.

The change in division saw Tchato continue to play an important role last season as Montpellier competed in Ligue 2. He made 29 appearances during the campaign before deciding to move on.

His time at Montpellier also led to international recognition. Tchato leaves the club having earned five caps for Cameroon.

The move to Frosinone represents the first time in Tchato’s senior career that he will play outside France. The defender is now preparing for a new challenge in Italy after spending his entire club career with Montpellier.

Frosinone have recently secured promotion and will be looking to establish themselves in the Italian top flight. Tchato has therefore joined a side with the immediate objective of remaining in Serie A.

For the Cameroonian, the transfer provides an opportunity to test himself in a new league after developing his career in French football.

His experience of playing in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 will be valuable as he begins the next stage of his career.

Tchato leaves Montpellier having spent most of his life with the club, from his arrival in the academy in 2008 through to his professional career.

Now, at 23, he will attempt to make an impact in Italy and prove himself in Serie A with Frosinone.

The move marks a significant change for the defender, who is embarking on his first experience abroad after 17 years with Montpellier.
