Enrique commits to Paris St-Germain project and sets sights on European treble

Luis Enrique says he wants to remain Paris St-Germain manager for many years, despite his current contract running until 2027, as he targets a third consecutive Champions League title with the French club.

The Spaniard believes PSG’s project is the most exciting of his coaching career and says his relationship with the club’s hierarchy, players and supporters has given him the motivation to continue.

Speaking to the official UEFA website, Enrique said he planned to give everything necessary to keep Paris St-Germain at the summit of European football.

Enrique took charge of Paris St-Germain in 2023 and has overseen an unprecedented period of success in a short time, guiding the club to two Champions League triumphs. That achievement has established Paris St-Germain as one of the leading forces in European football.

The manager said his next challenge was not simply reaching the top, but ensuring the club stayed there.

Paris St-Germain were previously not regarded as leading contenders for the Champions League, but are now among the teams most strongly tipped to win the competition. Enrique believes that change has brought greater responsibility, with opponents now treating his side as a serious threat whenever the tournament is discussed.

He also said the club had a historic opportunity to match Real Madrid’s achievement by winning the Champions League for a third successive season.

That ambition, he added, had created an exceptional source of motivation for both the players and coaching staff. Paris St-Germain did not want to be satisfied with previous achievements and instead intended to keep progressing.

“Staying at the top is much harder than reaching it,” Enrique said in discussing the demands facing the club.

‘The most exciting project’

Enrique also reflected on the seven-week break he took after Paris St-Germain’s most recent Champions League triumph. He spent the time with his family in an attempt to step away from the pressures of football.

However, he admitted that completely disconnecting from the game is almost impossible for a manager operating at the highest level. Phone calls continue, while decisions must be made over transfers and preparations for the new season even when a coach is officially on holiday.

Despite the success he has enjoyed in Paris, Enrique rejected the description of himself as a “genius”. He said his development was not based on extraordinary talent, but on his competitive nature, his desire to improve and his determination to strengthen his relationship with his players and the team.

Rather than relying solely on instructions, Enrique said he tries to persuade his players. He believes a manager must understand the game deeply and be able to explain it clearly and simply if he is to get the best from his squad.

That commitment to constant development remains his main driving force, even after winning the biggest trophies available.

Enrique described the Paris St-Germain project as the most exciting of his coaching career. He recalled meeting the club’s football adviser Luis Campos and said it took only 15 minutes for them to realise they shared the same vision.

The manager added that he feels comfortable at the club and enjoys starting each season with the backing of the board and supporters. Although he recognises how difficult it will be to repeat the successes of recent years, he is eager to continue working and deliver more victories for Paris St-Germain.
