English-Zimbabwean starlet Shumaira Mheuka hits hat-trick as Chelsea thrash Benfica in UEFA Youth League
English forward Shumaira Mheuka underlined his rising reputation with a hat-trick as Chelsea swept aside Benfica 5-2 in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday.
Born in England to Zimbabwean parents, Mheuka carried the captain’s armband on the day and produced a commanding display, striking twice from the penalty spot before completing his treble shortly after the hour mark.
His performance proved decisive in a thrilling contest that ensured Chelsea’s youngsters left Lisbon with maximum points.
Benfica had shown early promise, finding the net through Irish teenager Jaden Umeh and Daniel Banjaqui, but their momentum was halted by Mheuka’s clinical finishing.
Chelsea eventually pulled clear when Ryan Kavuma-McQueen and Kobe Barbour added late goals to put the result beyond doubt.
Mheuka’s display continues an impressive trajectory for the 17-year-old, who first made headlines when Brighton & Hove Albion handed him an under-18 debut at just 14.
Chelsea secured his signature in 2022, and he has since progressed swiftly through the academy ranks.
The forward has already broken into senior football, making his Chelsea debut in a UEFA Conference League clash against Astana in December 2024 before featuring in the Premier League against Southampton two months later.
Earlier this year, he also became the youngest player ever to start a European fixture for Chelsea, lining up against Copenhagen in the Conference League.
Also on display in Tuesday’s match was Landon Emenalo, son of former Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo, who featured in midfield.
But all eyes were firmly on Mheuka, whose blend of maturity, leadership, and finishing ability once again highlighted why he is widely considered one of the most exciting attacking talents in his age group.
Chelsea’s academy has long been celebrated for producing elite talent, and Mheuka’s latest performance will only heighten expectations that he is destined for a prominent role at Stamford Bridge.
