Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of Liverpool defender Isaac Mabaya on a season-long loan ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
The 20-year-old full-back, who has Zimbabwean heritage, becomes the latest addition to Shaun Maloney’s squad as the Latics seek to bolster their defensive options.
Mabaya made his senior debut for Liverpool in an FA Cup match against Plymouth Argyle earlier this year, coming off the bench in what was a significant milestone in his development.
Speaking after sealing the move, Mabaya said he was eager to begin the next chapter of his career and is excited by the opportunity to play regular first-team football in League One.
“I am delighted to be here, and can’t wait to get started,” he told Wigan’s official website.
“Speaking to the Head Coach about what he expects from me, I believe I can bring value to the team. I’ve had a few conversations with the Gaffer, and I really like his philosophies and way of playing. I think it will be a great place to develop my career.”
Mabaya also expressed his enthusiasm about playing in front of Wigan’s home fans, describing the club’s support as a major draw.
“I know how big the club is, and can’t wait to play in front of the fans. I’ve heard about how important the supporters are to the team and how good the fanbase is, and I can’t wait to play in front of them,” he added.
The loan marks an important step in Mabaya’s progression, as he looks to gain regular minutes and continue his growth in senior football away from Anfield.
