English-Nigerian Chizaram Ezenwata signs first professional contract with Chelsea
Chelsea have secured the future of highly rated forward Chizaram Ezenwata after the 17-year-old signed his first professional contract following a rapid rise through the club’s academy ranks.
Ezenwata, who was born in London to a Cameroonian mother and Nigerian father, has enjoyed a standout year at Cobham, establishing himself as one of the most productive attackers in Chelsea’s youth system.
The former Charlton Athletic prospect joined Chelsea during his Under-15s season and has progressed steadily, earning increased responsibility across multiple age groups. His development over the past 12 months has accelerated, prompting the club to move swiftly to tie him down.
After signing a scholarship contract in July 2025, Ezenwata began the current campaign as a regular with the Under-18s. He has led the scoring charts at that level, registering 11 goals across all competitions to underline his attacking threat.
That form has earned him opportunities beyond his age group. Ezenwata made his Under-21 debut last season against Manchester City and has featured twice in the EFL Trophy during the current campaign, gaining valuable senior exposure.
The striker has also sampled European competition, making his UEFA Youth League debut in Chelsea’s 3–1 win over Atalanta as part of Calum McFarlane’s squad. He has since remained in contention at that level as his responsibilities continue to grow.
Ezenwata’s impact has extended to domestic cup action. He scored the decisive goal in Chelsea’s opening FA Youth Cup match, netting in a 2–1 victory over Brentford to secure passage to the fourth round.
On the international stage, the forward has represented England at youth level. He scored twice in his first three appearances for the Under-18s in September before featuring for the country at the Under-17 World Cup later in the year.
Chelsea confirmed the agreement this week, expressing satisfaction at the teenager’s progress since arriving from Charlton. The club views Ezenwata as a forward with strong finishing instincts, physical presence, and the adaptability required for the modern game.
The professional deal marks a significant milestone for Ezenwata as he continues his development within Chelsea’s long-term pathway from academy football toward senior contention.
