English defender Marc Guehi has moved a step closer to a switch to Liverpool after reports emerged of a new ‘gentlemen agreement’ that would see the Crystal Palace captain join Anfield at the end of the season.
The centre-back is understood to be keen on the move, with Liverpool maintaining a long-standing interest after a failed attempt to sign him before the previous transfer deadline.
Guehi, who was born in Abidjan, has entered the final months of his contract at Selhurst Park and is widely expected to see out the deal.
The 25-year-old has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders, combining leadership with consistency, qualities that have made him a central figure for both club and country.
Liverpool’s pursuit is not new. The Merseyside club had a £35 million bid accepted by Palace on deadline day earlier in the season, only for the south London side to withdraw from the agreement hours before the window closed.
That decision frustrated negotiations but did not dampen Guehi’s interest in the move, with Sky Sports reporting that both player and club have since maintained informal lines of communication.
According to the report, the latest understanding between Liverpool and Guehi is that the defender will be allowed to complete a free transfer this summer, should Palace resist selling him in January.
The arrangement is described as a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’, with Liverpool prepared to wait rather than force a mid-season exit.
However, the situation remains fluid. Palace could still decide to cash in during the January window rather than risk losing their captain for nothing, particularly given growing interest from European heavyweights.
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are both monitoring Guehi’s contract status and are believed to be weighing up potential moves next month.
