English-Ghanaian midfielder Kobbie Mainoo told he must displace Bruno to start for Man United

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has delivered a blunt assessment of Kobbie Mainoo’s chances of breaking into his starting lineup, declaring that the youngster must unseat captain Bruno Fernandes if he wants to earn a place.

The statement came after United’s 1-1 draw against Fulham on Sunday, where Mainoo was left on the bench throughout.

Mainoo, who is of Ghanaian heritage despite representing England at senior level, has been viewed by many as one of United’s brightest academy products.

His rise into the first-team squad last season drew widespread praise, but Amorim’s latest comments suggest the 19-year-old faces a formidable barrier to consistent opportunities.

Speaking after the stalemate at Craven Cottage, Amorim did not mince words in outlining the midfielder’s challenge.

“Mainoo is fighting for his position with Bruno,” the Portuguese coach explained. “I changed two midfielders, I left Mason Mount there because we wanted to score a goal and when I changed, I felt the team needed one holding midfielder.

“So he needs to fight for his position with Bruno. At the moment he is fighting in training with Bruno for the position.”

The United captain’s influence remains undisputed, making Amorim’s declaration a clear indication of where the pecking order lies.

Fernandes has been the central figure of United’s midfield for several years, regularly providing goals and creativity, while also wearing the armband.
