Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has praised new signing Matheus Cunha for his immediate impact during the club’s preseason preparations.
Mainoo, who has Ghanaian roots despite representing England internationally, highlighted Cunha’s composure and strength in possession following the Brazilian striker’s arrival from Wolves.
Cunha featured prominently in United’s win over West Ham in their opening preseason fixture, drawing admiration from his new teammates.
“Adding Matheus brings something different again and I think it worked well in the last game,” Mainoo said. “You can stitch him up (with a poor pass) and he’ll deal with it! He loves playing under pressure and in one against ones, so it makes it easier for me.”
Mainoo also commented on the broader squad atmosphere as Manchester United continues its preseason tour in the United States.
He spoke positively of how the group has adapted to the addition of Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Diego Leon, all of whom have bolstered Erik ten Hag’s options across the pitch.
“The team’s definitely gelled well since we’ve been back and with the new additions – Diego, Matheus and Bryan – it’s been really good,” he noted.
“It’s been good, playing in there (midfield) with Manu (Ugarte), Bruno (Fernandes) or any of them – Casemiro, Toby (Collyer). It’s always good there.”
With the heat and intensity of the U.S. tour pushing players’ limits, Mainoo says the environment remains positive and focused.
“It’s very hot out here and in New Jersey, but it’s been nice. Training’s been good, we got the first win against West Ham so we’re all feeling good.”
United continue their preseason with fixtures aimed at sharpening squad cohesion ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
