English-Ghanaian Danny Welbeck revels in brace as Brighton stun Liverpool
Danny Welbeck could hardly hide his excitement after firing a decisive double to power Brighton & Hove Albion to a 2-1 victory over Liverpool, describing the performance and result as a complete team effort.
The veteran forward struck on either side of halftime at the Falmer Stadium, with Brighton delivering a composed and disciplined display against one of the Premier League’s most formidable sides.
The win secured three crucial points and underlined the Seagulls’ ability to compete at the highest level, with Welbeck at the heart of it.
“It was a great day. A really great performance from the lads because they have some great players with good qualities so you have to be switched on at all times, and really pleased to get the three points today.”
Welbeck’s opener came from a well-rehearsed attacking move, reflecting the team’s tactical preparation and cohesion in the final third.
His second goal, though, carried a mix of relief and frustration, as the striker admitted the modern game’s reliance on VAR has altered the immediate joy of scoring.
“We work on it throughout the week, and there are a lot of different patterns that we have. It’s nice when it works on a match day.”
“It’s so annoying, honestly. I think I have a bit of ptsd because when we played against Fulham, and I scored, and celebrated wildly I think I was offside by like an elbow or something, which was a little bit mad but yeah it’s difficult because you want to celebrate but you don’t know if you’re offside so you have to wait for the VAR. It takes a lot of time, and it takes the joy out of it.”
Beyond his own contributions, Welbeck was quick to highlight the performances of his teammates, singling out Yankuba Minteh for his relentless attacking threat throughout the match.
“Mintah was incredible. He was threatening throughout the whole game, and once he’s playing like that and he’s putting that amount of energy, passion and hardwork, he’s going to be really dangerous for any team he comes up against.”
He also reserved praise for experienced midfielder James Milner, whose professionalism continues to set the standard within the squad.
“Who Benjamin Button? Yeah, James Milner is incredible. So for me, I’m thirty-five and he’s fourty, and he is pushing every single day. It’s not normal to see it.
“You only see it in match day but if you see what he is doing throughout the week, and the stuff that he is not just doing on the pitch, but off it, he is pushing the standards for everyone every single day. I really hope that this isn’t his last season because he has plenty more left in the tank as you can see in his performances over the last few weeks.”
