Olympique Marseille have confirmed the signing of midfielder Angel Gomes, who joins the club on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Lille.
The 24-year-old, who has Angolan roots despite representing England at international level, will officially become a Marseille player on July 1.
Gomes had spent four seasons at Lille, where he developed into one of Ligue 1’s most creative midfielders. He departs with 10 goals and 19 assists in 134 appearances for the club, having joined from Manchester United in 2020.
Gomes’ arrival continues Marseille’s recruitment drive ahead of the 2025/26 season and reunites him with former Manchester United teammate Mason Greenwood.
The Ligue 1 outfit sees Gomes as a key piece in their rebuilding efforts, with his versatility and creative influence expected to strengthen their midfield options.
Despite interest from Premier League clubs including Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, Gomes opted to remain in France, a move seen as a sign of his confidence in Marseille’s sporting project under the current leadership.
His decision also reflects a preference for continuity in Ligue 1, where he has established himself as a consistent performer.
Marseille’s announcement signals another high-profile acquisition as the club seeks to return to Champions League football.
Gomes is expected to link up with his new teammates when pre-season training begins later this month.
