The English Football Association (FA) is taking steps to enhance the quality of the England national team, as reported by L’Equipe. One measure involves revising the policy for work visas granted to non-EU players. The aim is to limit the number of non-European players to two per Premier League club, while clubs in lower divisions would be prohibited from fielding any non-EU players.
Additionally, the FA proposes the introduction of ten reserve teams from major Premier League clubs into a fifth-division championship, along with ten other clubs from the National Conference, starting in 2016.
Since October, a committee—including Rio Ferdinand, the Manchester United defender—has been tasked with finding measures to bolster the presence and performance of English players in their domestic league. The committee has formulated the aforementioned proposals.
Currently, there are 66 regularly playing Premier League players eligible for selection, a number the FA aims to increase to 90 by 2022.
