England call up Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha as Dominic Calvert-Lewin returns

Thomas Tuchel has named his England squad for the next international break, with Liverpool forward Rio Ngumoha included and Dominic Calvert-Lewin recalled after a strong start to life at Leeds United.

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott is also selected after being part of Tuchel’s preparation camp before this summer’s World Cup, although he was not included in the final 26-player squad.

Ngumoha, 18, made his senior England debut in June, coming on during the second half of a 1-0 friendly victory over New Zealand on 6 June. He established himself in Liverpool’s first team last season, making 35 appearances and scoring two goals.

Calvert-Lewin was part of Tuchel’s squad for the international break in March and played 34 minutes in a 1-1 friendly draw with Uruguay. That was his first England appearance since 2021, but he was left out of the squad for the World Cup.

The 29-year-old moved to Leeds United on a free transfer from Everton last summer and has since rediscovered his form. He has scored 19 goals in 45 appearances for the club, including four during the current season.

Scott, 23, has been called up twice by Tuchel but has yet to make his senior England debut. He has made an impressive start to the 2026-2027 season, scoring once and providing two assists.

Fifa has changed the men’s international calendar for the 2026-2030 period by combining the September and October international breaks into one window.

As a result, England will play four matches across a three-week break for the first time, with all four fixtures coming in the group stage of the Nations League.

Tuchel’s side begin against world champions Spain at Wembley on 26 September. They then face Czechia at Fortuna Arena on 29 September, followed by Croatia at Stadion HNK Rijeka on 3 October.

The break concludes with another meeting with Czechia at Wembley on 6 October.

Portugal are the reigning Nations League champions after beating Spain on penalties in the final in June 2025.

England’s best performance in the competition came in its inaugural 2018-2019 edition, when they finished third after defeating Switzerland in a penalty shootout.
