Emmanuel Frimpong has received FIFA’s approval to play for Ghana in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) 2013. The 20-year-old midfielder, currently on loan to Charlton from Arsenal, had previously represented England at the under-16 and under-17 levels. However, Frimpong expressed his desire to play for his homeland, Ghana.
After facing delays in the approval process due to necessary documents from the British federation, the paperwork has now been completed. Frimpong is excited about the opportunity to play for Ghana, stating, “I have always said that I will play for Ghana because I am a Ghanaian. England gave everything to me and my family, but I never saw myself playing for England.”
Frimpong joins a talented midfield in the Black Stars team, which includes players like Anthony Annan, Derek Boateng, Afriyie Acquah, and Rabui Mohammed. His eligibility adds to the options for Ghana’s coach, Kwesi Appiah. Frimpong is the fifth Ghanaian player to benefit from the new FIFA laws allowing players to switch national teams.
