Roma Eye Tottenham’s Emmanuel Adebayor as Destro Replacement
Rome, Italy — Togo international Emmanuel Adebayor has emerged as a potential transfer target for AS Roma, as the Serie A club prepares for the possible departure of striker Mattia Destro during the January transfer window.
According to Italian daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma manager Rudi Garcia is considering the out-of-favour Tottenham Hotspur forward as a short-term solution to bolster his attacking options. Adebayor, who has not featured for Spurs since November, is reportedly open to a move in search of more regular playing time.
The 30-year-old former Arsenal and Real Madrid striker is under contract with Tottenham until June 2015, but his limited appearances under Mauricio Pochettino have sparked speculation about a mid-season exit. A move to Roma could offer the experienced forward a fresh challenge and the opportunity to reignite his career in one of Europe’s top leagues.
Tottenham, for their part, may be open to letting Adebayor leave this winter in order to recoup some value before his contract expires. However, Pochettino has publicly stated that he still sees a role for the Togolese striker in his squad, complicating any potential negotiations.
Should the move materialize, Adebayor would join a Roma side still fighting for the Serie A title and competing in Europe — a stage where his experience could prove valuable.
