In a comprehensive interview with Goeff Shreeves of Beanyman Sports, Adebayor reflects on the challenges he faced in 2013, including the tragic death of his brother, his exclusion by Andre Villas-Boas, and his subsequent resurgence. Despite acknowledging no ill will towards the Portuguese coach, Adebayor now channels his energy on the field for his late brother. Here are some excerpts from the interview:
“I love playing football. I was born to play football. And when you don’t do it, you don’t feel good in your head. 2013 was a difficult year. Already in 2005, it was difficult because I lost my father, but last year it was worse. When someone calls you after training to tell you that your brother is dead, it’s painful.”
“We should not judge Andre Villas-Boas. He wanted the best for his team. He made mistakes; we all make mistakes, but I believe he is a great man. I’m not here to judge him. I’m not one to look back. All this has passed. I wish André a lot of luck. But for me, 2014 will be better than 2013, that’s for sure.”
“I became a man when my brother died. When I came home for the funeral, everything had to be organized even though I am the little brother. From there, I became aware of what I was becoming in the family – the father of the family. I am one of the most popular people in Togo, and it is often very difficult to wear. From now on, I give 100% of myself on the pitch.”
