Emmanuel Adebayor Faces Fresh Family Dispute After Togo’s AFCON Exit
Fresh off Togo’s elimination from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, striker Emmanuel Adebayor finds himself at the center of a renewed family controversy. In a revealing interview on Ghanaian radio station Peace FM, his sister Maggie accused the Tottenham forward of abandoning their mother and cutting off contact with his family.
According to Maggie, their mother now sells polythene bags and padlocks at the Ghana-Togo border and hasn’t seen or spoken to Adebayor in over a year. “She’s not asking for money. She just wants to see her son,” Maggie said tearfully. She further claimed that Adebayor had evicted their mother from her home and stopped supporting the family financially.
Adebayor, never one to shy away from responding publicly, strongly denied the accusations. Speaking to the same station, he said:
“How can I talk to a mother who, with the complicity of my sisters, plotted against me? They should stop talking. They should stop doing their black magic on me.”
The tension between Adebayor and his family is not new. In 2013, he was accused of involvement in his older brother Peter’s death, with claims that he used occult practices, an accusation he denied outright. The striker maintains that he has gone above and beyond for his family, but says they have taken his generosity for granted.
“The one now saying she’s my sister—I bought her a $1.2 million house in East Legon. Do you think she did that alone?” he said. “Later, I found out she rented out the house. They’ve already started planning how to divide my properties. ‘When he dies, you take this car, I take that house’—can you imagine?”
With Togo’s exit from the AFCON qualifiers and growing unrest in his personal life, Adebayor finds himself in the spotlight for reasons beyond the pitch once again.
