The Confederation of African Football (CAF) takes a strong stance against cheating, evident in its recent decision to disqualify Gambia from the Orange Under-20 African Cup of Nations.
According to the official statement on the CAF website, the decision stemmed from concerns raised by Liberia regarding the eligibility of certain players fielded by Gambia during the first leg of the qualifiers. Despite Gambia’s 0-1 victory in the match, players Sampierre Mendy, Buba Sanneh, Bubacarr Trawally, Saloum Fall, and Ali Sowe, all born in 1994, were deemed ineligible to participate due to regulations specifying that only players born on or after January 1, 1995, are eligible for the competition.
As a consequence of this disqualification, Liberia is granted direct qualification to the next round and will no longer have to play the return match against Gambia.
