Eliesse Ben Seghir, AS Monaco’s 19-year-old sensation, has been a key figure in the club’s stellar season, with five goals and three assists to his name.
Yet, ahead of Monaco’s showdown with Olympique de Marseille, Ben Seghir revealed just how close he was to donning the famous OM jersey.
Speaking to Téléfoot, the prodigy, who emerged from Monaco’s famed La Diagonale academy in late 2022, confessed: “Before joining Monaco, [Marseille] was the club I was closest to joining. I was really close to signing there. But when Monaco calls, it’s hard to say no. My family’s advice played a huge role too.”
It’s a decision Ben Seghir doesn’t regret. His rise at Monaco has been meteoric, paralleled by his growing impact with the Moroccan national team. “I’m very happy here,” he added.
Interestingly, Marseille isn’t entirely without a Ben Seghir connection Eliesse’s older brother, Salim, remains contracted to the club but is currently on loan at Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland.
Ben Seghir made his senior Moroccan national team debut on March 22, 2024, in a friendly against Angola.
