Elche will attempt to bring an unwanted 16-game La Liga sequence to an end when they host Real Madrid on Tuesday evening in the sixth round of the Spanish top flight.
According to Opta, Elche have not beaten Real Madrid in their past 16 league meetings, drawing three and losing 13 since a 3-1 victory in March 1978. It is the longest period Elche have gone without defeating the capital club in the competition.
Real Madrid are also unbeaten in their past eight away games against Elche in La Liga, recording six wins and two draws. That is their longest unbeaten away run against Elche in the history of the league.
The visitors have won their past five La Liga matches played on a Tuesday. Another victory would give Real Madrid their longest winning run on that day in the competition, while Elche are enduring their worst Tuesday sequence in the Spanish top flight after losing their last three such fixtures.
Real Madrid have lost four of their past nine away league matches, alongside four wins and one draw. Since 2019, they have suffered five or more away defeats in a calendar year only once in La Liga: seven losses in 2023 under Carlo Ancelotti.
Elche have failed to win any of their five matches in the 2026-2027 La Liga season, drawing twice and losing three times. It is the third occasion in the 21st century that they have opened a top-flight campaign without a victory in their first five games. The previous instances were in 2013-2014, when they drew three and lost two, and 2022-2023, when they drew once and lost four.
Real’s attacking statistics
Real Madrid’s shots have struck the post or crossbar eight times in La Liga this season. That is twice the total of any other side, with Barcelona next on four.
They are also the first team since at least the 2003-2004 season to hit the woodwork eight times in their opening five matches of a La Liga campaign.
Elche recorded 33.3% possession in their most recent league match, against Athletic Club. It was their lowest share in a La Liga game since February 2023, when they had 27.6% against Real Madrid.
Kylian Mbappe, who recently registered his 50th La Liga win with Real Madrid, has scored six goals in five league appearances this season. It is his highest total after his first five top-flight matches for the club.
Arda Guler has created more chances than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues this season, with 24. He has made at least five chances in four of his five La Liga appearances.
The match will be Jose Mourinho’s first La Liga meeting with Elche. The Real Madrid manager has previously beaten all 24 opponents he has faced in the competition.
