El Hadji Diouf urges Senegal’s Young Lions to chase second AFCON title

El Hadji Ousseynou Diouf delivered an inspiring message to Senegal’s newest national team players during their traditional initiation into the Lions’ Den.

The former two-time African Footballer of the Year, now part of the coaching staff, addressed newcomers Ibrahim Mbaye and Mamadou Sarr ahead of Senegal’s friendly against Brazil.

Diouf emphasized the responsibility that comes with wearing the national jersey. “First, I’m talking to the younger players, not the older ones.

Especially those who have never seen us play, like Ibrahim Mbaye,” he said, directly engaging the new recruits.

Diouf also shared a personal connection with Mamadou Sarr, the Strasbourg defender and son of former Senegalese international Pape Sarr.

“I remember the little bag I carried when he was very young. I was at his christening,” he added, creating a lighthearted moment in front of the squad.

The Senegalese legend encouraged the young players to embrace their potential and rise to the challenge of representing their nation.

“You thrilled us, and I know you can continue to do so. Senegal, Africa, and all football fans are counting on you. Senegal’s second Africa Cup of Nations title is within reach.

It’s in your hands, in your minds, and through your intelligence,” Diouf declared, highlighting the significance of mental strength and tactical awareness.

True to his humorous personality, Diouf also reminded the players of his own legendary status.

“Ibrahim, I’m the first and second African Footballer of the Year in Senegal, without even trying,” he quipped, eliciting laughter and easing any tension during the initiation.

The speech set a clear tone for the newcomers, blending mentorship, inspiration, and humor.

It reinforced the ambition within the squad to continue Senegal’s success on the African stage, with Diouf’s words reminding the young Lions that they carry both history and expectation as they prepare for international fixtures.
