El Hadji Diouf backs Malang Sarr's decision to play for Senegal

Former Senegal international El Hadji Diouf has expressed support for Malang Sarr’s decision to join the Teranga Lions, emphasising that past statements about waiting for France should not overshadow the defender’s current commitment to Senegal.

“Players who say they are waiting for the French national team have no place in the Senegal national team. But he was young when he said that, and we must remember that,” Diouf told reporters.

“Now he is an adult, and he can make up for it. Personally, I have no problem with it. If the national team needs him, why not? It is up to the coach to judge whether he needs him or not.”

Diouf highlighted Senegal’s depth and quality, noting that Sarr will be joining a squad brimming with talent.

“Senegal has very good players. They have just been African champions, and there is talent everywhere. Playing for the national team today is a very great thing. Playing for Senegal or for Argentina is the same. We have great players, and it should be a source of pride to say that you played with Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, or Idrissa Gana Gueye.”

Sarr, who has had a solid career in Europe with RC Lens and previously OGC Nice, is now set to make his senior debut for Senegal, bolstering a defense that is entering a new competitive phase following their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

Diouf’s remarks underscore the optimism around integrating Sarr into a squad blending established stars with emerging talent.
