Real Madrid will face Barcelona without Vinicius Junior in tonight’s El Clasico at Camp Nou, ending the Brazilian’s run of appearances in the fixture since 2019 and placing the spotlight on Yan Diomande.
Vinicius has featured in every Clasico since 1 March 2020, becoming one of the defining players of the rivalry and a leading figure in Real Madrid’s new generation. His suspension means this will be the first meeting between the clubs without him since 18 December 2019, according to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo.
The Brazilian has played a central role in several of the fixture’s key moments during that period. He scored a hat-trick in the 2025 Spanish Super Cup final, while he was also involved when Barcelona beat Real Madrid 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2022 and 2024.
The last time Vinicius was absent, he remained an unused substitute as Zinedine Zidane chose not to select him. Real Madrid used a 4-3-1-2 formation, with Isco operating behind Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.
Casemiro, Toni Kroos and Federico Valverde formed the midfield, while Ferland Mendy and Dani Carvajal played at full-back. Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane occupied central defence, with Thibaut Courtois in goal.
That match ended 0-0, making it the most recent goalless Clasico. It had originally been scheduled for 26 October but was postponed because of severe tensions on the streets of Barcelona. The unrest followed the court ruling issued the previous day concerning the events of 1 October 2017 and their aftermath.
Real Madrid may be less troubled by Vinicius’ absence this time. Given his status within the squad, he could have been selected regardless of his current form, potentially creating considerable debate around the team.
His suspension instead provides an opportunity for Diomande to take on a more prominent role. The Ivory Coast player faces a major test after Real Madrid paid 146m euros to sign him this season, making him the most expensive transfer in the club’s history.
Vinicius’ Clasico record will remain at eight goals in 24 appearances, with 11 victories, 12 defeats and one draw. Diomande now has the chance to begin building his own record against Barcelona.
A strong performance from the former Leipzig player could earn him more playing time and put pressure on Vinicius’ position in the team. It could even leave the Brazilian in a less influential position than he occupied when Jose Mourinho arrived.
The longer-term picture, however, will depend on the next meetings between the rivals. Those could come in a potential 2027 Spanish Super Cup final, the Copa del Rey, the Champions League or the return La Liga fixture at Santiago Bernabeu.
