Egyptian attacker, Mohamed Salah has once again etched his name into Premier League history by hitting the 20-goal mark in a season for the fifth time.
The Liverpool star reached the milestone with a first-half penalty against Bournemouth on Saturday before adding another goal to take his tally to 21 for the season. His second strike was also his 178th in the Premier League, pushing him past Frank Lampard in the all-time goalscoring charts.
Salah has been in exceptional form this season, leading the league not only in goals but also in assists (13). Only two players—Andy Cole (1993-94) and Harry Kane (2020-21)—have ever finished a Premier League season as the outright leader in both categories. Salah narrowly missed out on this feat in 2021-22 when he shared the Golden Boot with Son Heung-min but topped the assist charts.
The Egyptian’s latest achievement places him in elite company. Only Alan Shearer (7), Sergio Agüero (6), and Kane (6) have recorded more 20-goal Premier League campaigns. Salah now stands level with Thierry Henry on five.
Despite speculation about his future at Liverpool, Salah remains the only active player on this prestigious list. If he stays at Anfield beyond this season, he has a strong chance of climbing even higher. He turns 33 in June, but his performances show no signs of decline.
Salah has reached 20 goals faster than ever before, achieving the feat in just 23 games. Even in his record-breaking 2017-18 season, when he set a then-Premier League record of 32 goals in a 38-game campaign, it took him 25 matches to reach 20.
A key factor this season has been his consistency—he has started all 23 of Liverpool’s Premier League games. If he maintains this availability, surpassing his personal best of 32 goals in a season remains a real possibility.
Salah has also come close to the 20-goal mark on several other occasions. He netted 19 goals in both the 2019-20 and 2022-23 seasons and 18 in 2023-24. In two of those seasons, he endured late-season goal droughts, which prevented him from increasing his tally.
While he currently sits joint third in the rankings, Salah’s hunger for goals suggests there’s plenty more to come.
