Egyptian referee Mahmoud Ashour has earned a spot as a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the upcoming 2025 Club World Cup in the United States.
His selection was confirmed in an official communication from FIFA’s Referees Committee to the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), which shared the news on Monday.
Ashour’s appointment adds to his growing reputation on the global stage. Just last July, he officiated matches at the Paris Olympics, showing consistent performance at the highest level. His latest assignment comes as no surprise, especially as he has also been nominated for a role at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The new-format Club World Cup will bring together 32 teams for the first time, running from June 14 to July 13. Five Arab clubs have secured spots: Al Ahly (Egypt), Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia), Espérance de Tunis (Tunisia), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), and Al Ain (UAE).
Ashour’s selection marks another proud moment for Egyptian refereeing on the global stage, and a major milestone in his international career.
