Egyptian Premier League: Al Ahly, Zamalek set for Blockbuster Cairo derby on Monday
Egyptian football’s fiercest rivalry will take centre stage on Monday when Al Ahly face archrivals Zamalek at Cairo International Stadium in the headline fixture of the Egyptian Premier League’s ninth round.
The Red Devils approach the clash under pressure, having endured a dip in form that cost Spanish coach José Ribeiro his job. In his place, former assistant Emad El-Nahhas has been handed the reins on an interim basis as the club looks to steady its campaign.
Al Ahly, the defending champions, sit sixth in the table with 12 points from seven matches, recording three wins, three draws, and a single defeat. Zamalek, meanwhile, arrive in far stronger shape, leading the standings on 17 points after eight games, with five victories, two draws, and one loss.
Despite Zamalek’s recent edge, history tilts heavily in Al Ahly’s favor. The two giants have clashed 130 times in league history, with Ahly winning 59 encounters compared to Zamalek’s 30, while 41 matches ended level.
On the financial front, the gulf is equally evident. According to Transfermarkt, Al Ahly’s squad is valued at around €38 million, more than double Zamalek’s €15.4 million.
Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet is the most valuable player across both clubs at €5 million, followed by Imam Ashour (€4m), Ahmed Mostafa “Zizo” (€3.5m), and the duo of Aliou Dieng and Achraf Bencharki (€3m each).
For Zamalek, recent signing Juan Alvina tops their valuation chart at €1.5m, with Palestinian internationals Adi Al-Dabbagh and Nabil Imad “Dunga” next at €1.2m apiece.
The stage is set for another chapter in Egyptian football’s greatest rivalry, with pride, points, and momentum on the line.
