Egyptian premier league 2024-2025 season kicks off with exciting opening matches
The Egyptian Premier League’s 2024-2025 season kicks off today, with the first round of matches commencing across the country, marking the start of a highly anticipated season for Egyptian football fans.
Today, Haras El Hodood will take on Smouha at El Max Stadium, while El Gaish Vanguards face Al Masry Club from Port Said at the New Suez Stadium.
The opening round will continue until Saturday, 2 November, with top clashes expected, including a showdown between reigning champions Al-Ahly and Ceramica, a rematch of the recent Egyptian Super Cup semi-final where Al-Ahly triumphed 2-1.
This season’s league matches will primarily be held at 5 p.m. or 8 p.m., with the notable 17th match day scheduled to kick off at 9 p.m. Al-Ahly, crowned champions for a record 44th time last season, enters the competition alongside 17 other teams, including major contenders Zamalek, Pyramids, Ismaily, Al-Masry, Al-Ittihad, El-Gouna, National Bank, and Enppi, among others.
In an interesting shift for the 2024-2025 season, the league has introduced a new structure. Each team will first compete in 17 matches in the initial round.
Following this, the league will split into two groups: the Championship Group, featuring the top nine teams battling for the league title and spots in continental tournaments, and the Relegation Group, where the bottom nine teams will fight to avoid demotion.
Only two teams will face relegation at the end of the season.
With this refreshed league format, competition is expected to intensify, offering fans thrilling matches as each team aims for the top half of the table.
The Egyptian Premier League continues to evolve, maintaining its status as a key pillar in African football, with top teams competing at the highest level for both national pride and a chance to qualify for major continental competitions.
