Egyptian midfielder Nasser Maher expresses frustration over national team exclusion
Nasser Maher, a midfielder for Zamalek, recently broke his silence after his exclusion from Egypt’s national team list for the November training camp.
Taking to Instagram, Maher expressed his shock and deep disappointment, writing, “I’m sorry to post this, it’s not my nature to speak out, but the situation is really discouraging for me because of the national team list.”
He further stated, “Honestly, I believe I deserve at least to be on the squad. It’s clear and does not need justification, as critics, analysts, and fans have all spoken positively about my recent performance.”
Maher added, “Frankly, what happened lately is utterly unfair and has nothing to do with football. My efforts have gone to waste, and my dreams disappeared as though they meant nothing, even though I did everything required. It’s truly unfortunate, and what’s happening would discourage even a mountain.”
His open statement triggered debate about selection criteria for Egypt’s national team. Despite his impressive performances, Maher was left out as coach Hossam Hassan opted to mix experience and new talent during Egypt’s UAE training camp preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations.
