Egyptian goalkeeper Abou Gabal Gabaski has officially joined Modern Sport FC on a short-term deal that runs until June 2026, marking a fresh chapter in his lengthy domestic career.
The 36-year-old veteran, who recently parted ways with National Bank Egypt at the end of the 2024–25 campaign, has opted for a new challenge following the expiry of his contract.
Despite an underwhelming season marked by injury, Gabaski is determined to reignite his career with his new club.
Modern Sport FC’s acquisition of the experienced shot-stopper has raised some eyebrows, particularly as Gabaski featured only once last season due to a persistent knee problem.
The club, however, appears confident in his ability to recover and contribute meaningfully over the coming year.
Gabaski’s move is widely seen as a calculated risk for Modern Sport, given his recent fitness concerns.
But for the goalkeeper, it represents a final opportunity to make a compelling case for a return to the Egyptian national team ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be held in Morocco later this year.
The former Zamalek goalkeeper has 12 international caps to his name and featured prominently during Egypt’s AFCON campaigns in 2021 and 2023.
He was particularly instrumental during the 2021 edition in Cameroon, where his performances helped Egypt reach the final.
That tournament remains a career highlight and a source of motivation as he eyes a potential call-up for Morocco 2025.
Speaking about his move, Gabaski remains focused on regaining match fitness and contributing to his new side.
With competition for the No.1 shirt expected to be fierce, the veteran keeper will need to quickly prove his form and reliability.
Modern Sport FC, who continue to build a squad capable of challenging in the domestic league, are banking on Gabaski’s experience and leadership in the dressing room.
The club is hopeful that the former national team hero can rediscover the form that once made him one of Egypt’s most dependable goalkeepers.
As Gabaski begins his new stint, all eyes will be on whether this move can revive his international ambitions and give him one final shot at glory on the continental stage.
