Jamal Al-Am, the president of the Egyptian Football Federation, has revealed a surprise regarding Liverpool star Mohamed Salah.
Salah’s record with the Egyptian national team lacks any titles, as he finished as the runner-up in the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017 and 2021.
However, he boasts a decorated career with Liverpool, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the English Premier League in 2020.
“The Mohammed Salah wants to play with the Olympic team in the Paris Olympics and will be present,” said the president of the Egyptian Football Federation.
He indicated that Brazilian coach Rogério Micale, coach of the Olympic team, will soon curse the names of the three major players participating in the Paris Olympics.
Each team is entitled to include three players over the age of 23 in the men’s football competition scheduled between July 24th and August 9th.
Micale, who led his country to a football silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics, oversees the Egyptian team.
Egypt has been placed in Group C alongside Spain, the Dominican Republic, and a team from Asia.
Salah was absent from the latest list of new coach Hossam Hassan, who played in a friendly quadrangular tournament in Cairo and lost its final match against Croatia (2-4), following a request from the player himself and his Liverpool team due to his incomplete readiness.
Salah gradually returned to play with Liverpool after his injury in the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast last February, and will join the senior team in the June camp as confirmed by Al-Am.
Responding to a question from Agence France-Presse about the role of the Football Federation in Salah’s participation with the senior team and the intervention of the Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi, Al-Am said, “Mohamed Salah’s relationship with the national team coaching staff is the talk of the hour now, and I confirm that it is not as some portray it in the media.”
He added, “It is natural that there is communication between the coaching staff and professional players in general, and Salah is a first-class national player and no one exaggerates his love for his homeland Egypt.
In the last Africa Cup of Nations, Salah was indeed injured and that’s why he left the national team and returned to Liverpool for treatment.”
