Carlos Queiroz emerges as potential returnee to coach Egypt's national team

The Egyptian Football Association has firmly dismissed rumours linking it with a move to appoint Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as technical director of the FA.

Reports had claimed Queiroz, currently in charge of Oman, was being lined up to replace Alaa Nabil after his departure.

EFA Secretary General Dr. Mostafa Azzam issued an official statement criticizing the speculation. “Spreading such inaccurate news would only create unnecessary confusion and disruption,” said Azzam, stressing that there have been no talks at all with Queiroz for this role. He underlined that the news circulating is completely inaccurate.

Earlier on Friday, the federation announced it was parting ways with Alaa Nabil at the end of his contract this month, which fuelled reports of Queiroz’s possible return to Egyptian football. Queiroz previously coached Egypt between October 2021 and April 2022, leading the Pharaohs to the Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost to Senegal, but failing to qualify for the 2022 World Cup after again losing to Senegal in the playoffs.

Away from the coaching speculation, the EFA also received confirmation from CAF that six stadiums have been approved to host upcoming continental matches: Cairo Stadium, Borg El Arab, Suez, Al Salam, Canal Authority Stadium and Air Defence Stadium.
