Mohamed Abdelmonem unavailable for RC Lens clash

OGC Nice coach Claude Puel has confirmed the unavailability of Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdelmonem ahead of their crucial French Ligue 1 clash against RC Lens.

In a highly competitive clash this weekend, Nice will play host to Lens, who are seriously competing for the French Ligue 1 title this season.

But Nice’s preparation for the clash has been dealt a massive blow, with coach Puel disclosing that their top defender Abdelmonem will not be available due to injury.

“Abdelmonem will not be available for Saturday’s game against Lens,” Puel told to ICI Azur in an interview.

The Egyptian international is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem, compounding what has already been a frustrating campaign for the defender. Abdelmonem has yet to make an appearance this season, having spent a significant period recovering from a prior knee injury that delayed his debut and disrupted his integration into the squad.

His continued absence is a major concern for Nice, who are struggling near the bottom end of the table. The club currently sits 15th in the Ligue 1 standings with 30 points, dangerously close to the relegation zone, and in desperate need of positive results.

The timing of the injury setback is particularly unfortunate, with Nice set to face a formidable Lens side enjoying an impressive campaign. Lens occupy second place with 63 points and remain firmly in contention for European qualification, making Saturday’s clash a daunting challenge for the hosts.

Abdelmonem had been targeting a return to action in this fixture, raising hopes of finally kick-starting his career in France after a prolonged spell on the sidelines. However, the latest injury has forced him to delay his comeback once again, adding to the player’s growing frustration.

Nice’s defensive options will now be stretched as they prepare to take on one of the league’s most in-form teams. For Abdelmonem, the focus shifts back to recovery, with the priority now being a full return to fitness after a season derailed by persistent injury issues.

As the Ligue 1 campaign enters its decisive phase, both player and club will be hoping the Egyptian defender can overcome his setbacks and play a role before the curtain falls on a challenging season.
