Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdel-Shafy retires; set for administrative role at Zamalek

Veteran Egyptian defender, Mohamed Abdel-Shafy, has decided to hang his boots at the end of the 2024/25 football season.

Zamalek defender Mahmoud Hamdi El-Wensh announced the retirement of Abdel-Shafy after the Egypt Cup final against Pyramids FC on Thursday, June 5.

“We wanted to win the Egypt Cup, as it would be a good conclusion for Mohamed Abdel Shafy with Zamalek,” El-Wensh said on ON Sport.

He continued, “I wish Mohamed Abdel Shafy success in his next step.

Abdel Shafy has been absent from Zamalek throughout the current season and has not participated in any matches with the team.

The veteran started his career with Zamalek in 2009, coming from Ghazl El Mahalla, and went on to play for Al-Ahli.

Abdel Shafy later returned to Zamalek in 2019 on a free transfer after his contract with Al-Ahly expired.

During his two spells at Zamalek, Abdel Shafy played 235 matches. He scored 11 goals and made 18 assists.

Sources have indicated that the defender is set to take up an administrative role at Zamalek next season.
