Egypt ready to face Spain despite Mo Salah’s absence
Egypt winger Mahmoud Hassan “Trezeguet” has expressed confidence that the national team can compete with Spain, despite the absence of captain Mohamed Salah, ahead of Tuesday’s international friendly in Barcelona.
Egypt prepare for Spain test without Salah
The Pharaohs will face Spain on March 30 as part of their preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the match taking place at Espanyol’s stadium and scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT.
Speaking during the pre-match press conference, Trezeguet acknowledged the scale of the challenge but maintained that Egypt are ready to test themselves against one of the strongest sides in international football.
While Spain’s quality was recognised, the winger suggested that Egypt’s approach would not be defined by caution, but by belief in their ability to compete.
Respect for Spain’s quality, including Lamine Yamal
Trezeguet singled out Spain’s rising talent Lamine Yamal, highlighting his rapid development and growing reputation in the game.
“Lamine Yamal is an exceptional player and is already among the best in the world… Facing a player of this caliber is a challenge for us, but we are ready to take it on,” said Trezeguet.
The remarks reflected a sense of respect within the Egyptian camp for Spain’s attacking strength, particularly the presence of emerging players who have quickly established themselves at the highest level.
At the same time, the comments indicated that Egypt do not intend to be overawed by individual opponents, even those considered among the best in the world.
Confidence built on team cohesion
Trezeguet also pointed to the work carried out under coach Hossam Hassan, describing the team’s preparation as a key factor in their confidence heading into the match.
“We are approaching this match fully aware of our responsibility. Coach Hossam Hassan has done a remarkable job with us and we have been playing together for a long time, so we understand each other perfectly,” he explained.
His comments suggested that continuity within the squad has helped build understanding among the players, which could prove important when facing a technically strong opponent.
The emphasis on cohesion highlighted Egypt’s belief that collective organisation can offset the challenges posed by individual quality within the Spanish team.
Positive momentum after Saudi Arabia victory
Egypt enter the fixture following a convincing 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in a recent friendly played in Jeddah.
Trezeguet described the result as an important boost for the squad, pointing to the quality of the opposition in that match.
“We managed to secure a big win against a strong team like Saudi Arabia, which is one of the best teams in Asia,” he said.
The performance has contributed to a positive atmosphere within the camp, as players prepare to face a more demanding test against Spain.
Despite the confidence expressed, Trezeguet acknowledged that the absence of Mohamed Salah remains a notable factor.
“We would have liked Mohamed Salah to be with us during this training camp… He is one of the best players in the world and he always brings a lot to the team,” he acknowledged.
Salah’s influence, both in terms of performance and leadership, is widely recognised within the squad. His absence places greater responsibility on other players to step forward.
Even so, the tone of the press conference suggested that Egypt are determined to approach the match with belief, viewing it as an opportunity rather than a limitation.
A valuable test ahead of World Cup preparations
The friendly against Spain is seen as a significant test as Egypt continue to prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
Facing one of the leading teams in international football offers a measure of the squad’s current level, while also providing an opportunity to refine tactics and build experience.
For Trezeguet and his teammates, the match represents a chance to demonstrate their readiness against elite opposition, even in the absence of their captain.
