Egypt to open 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying against Angola

Egypt will begin their qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with a home match against Angola on 25 September, national team director Ibrahim Hassan has announced.

The fixture will take place at Cairo International Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 22:00 local time.

Hassan also confirmed that Egypt’s second qualifying match will be played against South Sudan in Juba on 29 September. That game will begin at 15:00 Cairo time.

The two fixtures will launch Egypt’s campaign in Group B, where they have been drawn alongside Angola, South Sudan and Malawi.

Speaking through the official website of the Egyptian Football Association, Hassan said: “The national team will host Angola at 10pm on 25 September at Cairo International Stadium, in the first round of the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.”

He added: “Our team will play their second qualifying match against South Sudan on 29 September in Juba, at 3pm Cairo time.”

The dates confirm a demanding four-day gap between Egypt’s opening two matches. The national team will begin at home before travelling to South Sudan for their second Group B fixture.

Hassan also revealed that Egypt are considering arranging a friendly during their next training camp. “We are also looking into playing a friendly during the next camp, and preparations for it will be completed in the coming hours,” he said.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be hosted jointly by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. The tournament is scheduled to take place from 19 June to 17 July 2027.

Egypt are the most successful team in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, having won the competition seven times. Their most recent title came in 2010, when they defeated Ghana in the final.

They finished fourth at the latest edition of the tournament, which was held in Morocco in 2025. That result followed Egypt’s progress to the last 16 of the World Cup, where they were eliminated by Argentina.

The group-stage schedule means Egypt will have an early opportunity to establish their position in the race to qualify for the continental finals. Their campaign will start with the visit of Angola in Cairo before the trip to Juba four days later.

Hassan’s announcement provides the first confirmed details of Egypt’s preparations for the qualifying window, while the proposed friendly remains under discussion. The national team’s opponents in Group B are Angola, South Sudan and Malawi, with the top-level objective of securing a place at the 2027 tournament in East Africa.
